U16 West Cork Championship Final

2010 Valley Rovers U16 v Clonakilty

Valley Rovers Under 16 Ladies went to Clonakilty on Saturday 30th October to contest the U16 West Cork Final against Clonakilty. On a fine pitch in Clon's splendid complex Valley Rovers hit the ground running from the throw-in and attacked with vigour but found it difficult to register scores. Clonakilty hit back with a goal and looked very dangerous on attack. Valleys defence had to be on high alert to keep out their sweeping attacks. Valley Rovers forwards worked hard against a tight defence and got some excellent points and went into the break leading 0–6 to 1–2.At half time the Valleys girls were collectively adamant that they wanted the West Cork Title and bring home their first cup for 2010. But early in the second half Clonakilty struck with a well taken penalty to test the Rover's metal. But when determination and hard work is required the Valley's girls have it in abundance. Under relentless pressure the opposition had to yield to the best team on the day. With a fine team display Valley Rovers claimed the 2010 West Cork Under 16 Cup on a scoreline of 2–12 to 2–5.

Well done girls.

Minor Campaign, 2010

Valley Rovers Minor Campaign 2010 v Courcey Rovers, Gabriel Rangers, Clonakilty (West-Cork) v Douglas (County Quarter-Final) and v Glanworth (County Semi-Final)

The Minor competition was brought forward this year to avoid being played in November and December. With players involved with U16 and Adult teams it was still difficult to get started. The Valley Rovers squad is backboned by 15 girls who were training and playing with the Adult Intermediate team during the season. We finally got under way with a game against Courcey Rovers on September 6th in Innishannon. Having struggled to find our feet in the first half we dominated the second and ran out comfortable winners. Our next game was away to Gabriel Rangers on September 11th. We were grateful to Diarmuid O’Shea and Ger O’Mahony for stepping in that day as a few of the mentors were unable to travel due to Weddings etc. It was with hope rather than confidence that they left Innishannon that day with 16 players, but they pulled off a wonderful victory, 3-10 to 3-08. This was a great credit to the players and their new found mentors. With County qualification beckoning we took on Clonakilty in the final group match in Brinny. In a good lively match we ran out comfortable winners though somewhat flattered by the score. In the County we were drawn away to Douglas in the quarter final. They asked for the game to be put back to Tuesday, September 28th due to their involvement in the Senior County Camogie semi final. When that game finished in a draw they asked for a further week and offered to come to Brinny which we consented to. We now understand that both sides went into this game with confidence. A couple of early goals settled us and we kept our noses well in front in a ding dong battle emerging winners 7-04 to 4-03. We were glad to have come through what was a difficult test. Glanworth were our opponents in the County Semi-Final. The game was played on Sunday, October 10th in Glanmire. From early on we dominated and thankfully had recovered our point scoring form, with a substantial lead at half time the second half was a more even affair and we ran out comfortable winners. We now face old friends Gabriel Rangers in the County Final which is provisionally fixed for Saturday October 16th 4.30/5.00pm in Dunmanway. We would ask you to support this fine squad who have worked hard to get to this stage of the competition.

The Squad are: Tessa Hawkes, Jessie Hawkes, Audree Walsh, Julie O’Mahony, Fiona O’Sullivan, Joan-Marie O’Leary, Ena Coughlan, Julie Callanan, Eimear O’Regan, Katie Richardson, Aoife Cummins, Tessa Crowley, Marie Forde, Niamh O’Shea, Connie Hawkes, Emma O’Donovan, Niamh Glavin, Orlagh Ryan, Meg O’Sullivan, Molly O’Sullivan, Ruth Callanan, and Laoighse McCarthy.
We wish Tessa Hawkes the very best in her move to college in England to continue her studies.
Mentors: Teresa Richardson, Ita Hawkes, Pat Ryan, Chris O’Donovan, Ted O’Donovan.

U14 West Cork Championship Final,

2010 Valley Rovers U14 v Rosscarbery

The Valley Rovers U14 ladies footballers defeated Rosscarbery in the U14 West Cork Final in the GAA pitch in Ahiohill last Saturday, 2nd October. The Valley Rovers girls started well and went ahead at the start of the match with three consecutive points, but Rosscarbery came back into the game with a goal. A game being playing under wet conditions meant that although Valleys were leading at half time by two points, the match could still be won by either team. Everyone played with great team spirit. Valleys defence was very solid with Jessica Woods, Mary Ellen Sweetnam, Eleanor Murphy, Jennifer Murphy, Megan O'Brien, Leona Murphy and Caroline Murphy all playing well and although Ross had a number of shots on target, the Valley Rovers goalkeeper Megan Collins made some brilliant saves during the match. Both mid-fielders, Lisa Lynch and Eimear Cummins did great work up and down the pitch with Eimear scoring a great goal in the third quarter. With the wind and rain scores were limited but forwards Ciara Richardson, Aoibheann Harte, Emily Palmer, Katie Lynch, Michelle O'Regan, Roisin O'Regan and Sophie Murphy never gave up. The teams were level late into the final quarter when Valleys were awarded a penalty. Michelle O’Regan stepped forward and the ball found the back of the net. Valleys defence now came under renewed pressure from the Rosscarbery girls and every one of them gave one hundred and ten percent ensuring Valley Rovers took victory at the final whistle. This was an outstanding team effort based on a very solid defence, an excellent mid- field, and a forward line that was full of movement. Well done girls.

A very big "thank you" to the large number of people who came out on a miserable evening to support and encourage the girls.

Team: Megan Collins, Jessica Woods, Mary Ellen Sweetnam, Eleanor Murphy, Jennifer Murphy, Megan O'Brien, Lisa Lynch, Eimear Cummins (1-01), Ciara Richardson, Aoibheann Harte (1-01), Emily Palmer (0-01), Katie Lynch, Michelle O'Regan (2-1), Roisin O'Regan, Sophie Murphy, Leona Murphy, Caroline Murphy, Casey O'Sullivan, Eimear Wall, Joanne McCarthy.

U12A County Semi-Final,

2010 Valley Rovers U12A v Rosscarbery

The Valley Rovers U12A ladies football team had another very successful match in the U12 "A" County Semi-Final last Saturday ,11th September. This match, against Rosscarbery was played in the GAA pitch in Ballinascarthy. The Valley Rovers girls started well and went ahead from the start of the match to be leading at half time by two points. Everyone played with great courage and team spirit. Kate Bernard playing full forward scored 1-02 in the first half. Once again the defence was very solid with Kate O’Mahony, Ellie Kiely, Marog Murphy, Meave O’Brien, Rachel O’Sullivan and Laura Brew all playing well and although Ross had a few shots on target, the Valley Rovers goalkeeper Ciara Murphy made some brilliant saves during the game. The two mid-fielders, Sarah Murphy and Michelle Cottrell put in exceptional performances with Sarah having an outstanding second half and Michelle, in spite of receiving a heavy knock before half time, scoring a great point from play during the second half. Scores were scarce but a point from Kate O’Leary playing centre forward kept Valleys ahead until Ross got a goal to put them ahead for the first time in the match with just a few minutes remaining. Valleys upped the pressure and another point from Kate Bernard had the sides level at the final whistle. Extra time of 10 mins a half was played, and Valley Rovers showed great fitness levels and determination to out score Rosscarbery 4 points to 1 point during the extra time. Sinead Dart O’Flynn calmly scoring 2 points from frees and Eimear and Darragh Kiely, who were both brought on as subs, scoring from play. Valleys had a large number of supporters on the day and the encouragement from the sideline was evidence that everyone enjoyed this very exciting game. After the match the captain Ciara Murphy thanked the valleys team and stated they were ready for the final. Light refreshments were then enjoyed by all. Well done to everyone, and thanks to all who helped out in any way so far this year.

The “A” County final game is to be fixed for next weekend. Venue & time to be decided. Wishing them the best of luck.

U12A County Quarter Final,

2010 Valley Rovers U12A v Inch Rovers

The Valley Rovers U-12A ladies football team had another very successful match in the County Ouarter-Final round last Saturday morning 4th September. This match, against Inch Rovers from East Cork was played in the GAA pitch in Innishannon. The Valley Rovers girls played a very tough match in very warm weather and went ahead from the start of the match. They were well ahead at half time thanks to a goal scored by Aileen Cremin and two unstoppable shots from Kate Bernard playing full forward. The defence as usual was very solid with Kate O'Mahony, Ellie Kiely, Marog Murphy, Meave O'Brien, Rachel O'Sullivan, and Laura Brew quickly clearing their lines and not allowing the Inch girls much room to score. Our goalkeeper Ciara Murphy had a brilliant game which was rounded off by saving a penalty during the second half. After the match our captain Ciara Murphy thanked the Inch team for travelling and for a very enjoyable, sporting game. In turn the Inch mentors congratulated Ciara and the valleys team, and wished them the best of luck in the next round. Well done to everyone, and thanks to all who helped out in any way so far this year. The "A" County Semi-final game against Rosscarbery will be played in Ballinascarthy on Saturday 11th September at 12:00noon. Wishing them the best of luck.

U12A West Cork League 2010

Valley Rovers U12s v Beara

The Valley Rovers U-12A ladies football team had a very busy and a very successful weekend to complete the fixtures in the West Cork league. They travelled west to St Colums GAA grounds in Kealkil on Saturday morning 28 August for a double match against Beara. It was a lovely sunny morning in a beautiful part of the county and thanks to the Beara club for organising this midway venue for these matches. The Valley Rovers girls dug deep in a very tough match in very warm weather and they won the first match in a convincing fashion on a scoreline of 2-9 to 3-1, with one of the Beara goals scored from a penalty against our very brave goalkeeper, Kate Bernard. After a break for refreshments the second game was even closer with Valleys leading at all stages and winning by the slightest of margins of just 1 point. A very determined defence made up of Kate O Mahony, Ellie Kiely, Marog Murphy, Meave O Brien, Rachel O Sullivan, & Laura Brew held their positions well and ensured that scores for Beara were kept to a minimum. The hard-working midfield duo of Sarah Murphy & Michelle Cottrell showed great strength and stamina and fed some lovely ball to the forwards. These were Ciara Murphy, Aileen Cremin, Grace O Reilly, Helen Lynch, Ellen Casey & Eimer Kiely who kept the scores flowing. All subs, Aoife Reilly, Emma O Brien, Flo Dorrington, & Darra Kiely were needed for both matches. Team Sponsor: O'Leary Auto Services Valley Rovers U12s v Clonakilty The last match in this league was a home fixture the following day in Brinny Pitch on Sunday 29 August at 12 noon against Clonakilty. We had almost the same panel with the addition of Celine Lordan & Nessa O Callaghan. This was a much improved Clon team compared to the previous meeting of the sides in Clon last June, but Valleys combined well as a team and won the game to round off a great performance in this years West Cork League just loosing two matches (one away to Rosscarbery and a depleted team lost at home to Bantry). Well done to everyone, and thanks to all the parents who encouraged, travelled and helped out in any way so far this year. This team have earned a well deserved place in the " A " County competition with a quarter final game against Inch Rovers to be played in Innishannon on Sat 04 - Sept at 12:00 noon. Wishing them the best of luck.

U16 West Cork Championship Semi-Final,

2010 Valley Rovers U16s v Gabriel Rangers

On Saturday 14th August 2010 Gabriel Rangers girls came to the Bleech, Innishannon to take on Valley Rovers in the semi-final of the U16 West Cork Championship. After a delayed start it was Gabriels who got into gear early and put the pressure on the home side defence. This pressure yielded goals for Gabriels and Valleys depended for scores when catching the opposition on the break. Gabriels with into the break with what looked like a comfortable two goal lead, 5-1 to 3-1. On resumption it was Gabriels again who started best and struck again with another goal. But from there on it was Valleys on all out attack. The home side found it difficult to break down the opposition's defence although dominating possession. Scores eventually came and they came in the form of goals. Gabriels had to play out the last ten minutes with 14 players and in this penultimate period the Valley' Girls kept control and ran out five point winners. 7-5 to 6-3. Valleys now meet Clonakilty in the West Cork Final.

Intermediates Cork Championship

Round 2, 2010 Valley Rovers Intermediates v Nemo Rangers

We travelled to Nemo a bit concerned with Sile Johnson injured, but welcoming back Tessa Crowley and Ashling Glavin. We expected Nemo to be all out to reverse the League final result. We started with great tempo and practically owned the ball for the first 15 mins. However a combination of over eagerness, poor shot selection and misplaced final passes meant that all we had to show for our efforts was a goal by Maryanne Hawkes and a point by Sarah O’Donovan whilst Nemo had scored 3 points from 4 attacks. Gradually we settled and points by Anne O’Donovan and Orla Deasy were followed by 2 goals by Sarah. This left us ahead by 3-3 to 4 points at half time. We appeared to readjust the radar at half time and the points finally started to flow Tessa Crowley, Maryanne, Orla, Sarah (2), Clodagh Deasy (2) and Anne (5) all got on the score board. These were interspersed with a goal from Orla. On what was a difficult night for them Nemo responded with 2 goals leaving the final score 4-15 to 2-04. We were delighted with what is our first championship win over Nemo. The defence were outstanding all round with Lucy Hawkes excelling. Liz Bugler had a great game in the centre. The half forward line of Shauna McCarthy, Tessa Crowley and Katie Richardson were full of running and Sarah, Maryanne and Orla were always menacing. Clodagh, Jessie Hawkes, Emma O’Donovan, Julie Callanan & Marie Barrett slotted in seamlessly to a very good team performance.

Intermediates Cork Championship - Round 1, 2010

Valley Rovers Intermediates v Bride Rovers

Having been beaten in the semi final of the league Bride Rovers came to Brinny in determined mood. They began in whirl wind fashion and within 10 minutes had scored 2 goals and a point. Gradually Valleys settled but found scores hard to come by. They also wasted a number of chances from play, a few frees and a penalty. However by half time they built up a one point lead 1-5 to Bride Rovers 2-1 with points from Anne O’Donovan (4) Liz Bugler and a goal from Sarah O’Donovan. We regrouped at half time, played better in the second half but still found scores hard to get. We added 3 points via Sarah, Liz and Orla Deasy but Bride Rovers with less possession also added 3 points of their own. However we appeared to be the stronger heading to the finish when disaster struck when a high ball was adjudged to have crossed the line despite the best efforts of Tessa Hawkes. This grave Bride Rovers a 2 point lead with time running out. Valleys attacked from the kick out and Katie Richardson scored a good point under pressure. The next attack saw Orla Deasy win a free and on a difficult night for free taking Anne O’Donovan converted a tricky free to level the game. The game finished in a welter of excitement, a draw 1-10 to 3-04 with both sides regretting missed chances but relieved not to have dropped both points. It was a night when everything was hard work for Valleys, but the girls stuck at it and ground out a result when all appeared lost. The defence of Tessa Hawkes, Julie O’Mahony, Vivien Melia, Ena Coughlan, Shauna McCarthy, Lucy Hawkes, Eimear O’Regan worked hard. Midfield Anne and Sile ran all night. The forwards Liz, Sarah, Katie, Clodagh Deasy, Maryanne Hawkes, Orla and Emma O Donovan have had more productive nights but never once stopped trying.

Under 16 West Cork League - Round 5, 2010

Valley Rovers U16 v Rosscarbery

On 26 July, Valley Rovers took on Rosscarbery Girls in the U16 West Cork League in Ross. This was a high scoring game with both sides clocking up high scores. Ross had the best of the first half cutting through the Valleys to score 4-6 to Valleys 2-5 giving them a commanding 7 points lead at the half way stage. Valley Rovers reshuffled for the second half which allowed their defence who worked tenaciously but got on top and their attack laid siege on the Ross Town End goalmouth. Ross defence eventually succumbed to the pressure and the visitors turned around a 7 point deficit to have a 5 point winning margin. This was a very entertaining game between two talented sides who will be seeing each other again before the end of season I am sure. The final score was 7-10 to 5-11 with victory to Valley Rovers.

Valley Rovers Team: Laoighse McCarthy, Ruth Calanan, Niamh Glavin, Mary Ellen Sweetman, Joanmarie O'Leary, Connie Hawkes, Meg O'Sullivan, Julie Calanan, Aoife Cummins, Orlagh Ryan, Tessa Crowley, Michelle O'Regan, Megan O'Brien, Emma O'Donovan, Aoibhinn O'Callaghan, Tara O'Leary and Emer Cummins.

U16 West Cork League - Round 4, 2010

Valley Rovers U16 v Courcey Rovers

On 14 July, Valley Rovers U16’s took on neighbours and class mates Courcey Rovers in a league match. A showery evening cleared to give us ideal conditions for what transpired to be a most entertaining match with excellent free flowing football and great scoring. A few changes to Valleys line up were enforced due to holidays but the girls slotted in and adopted quickly to their new roles very well. There was a contrast in styles by both teams as Courceys used a running game to attack particularly from midfield and Valleys benefited from fast accurate delivery from the defence to set up their attacks. One point separated the teams at half time with Courceys to the fore. The second half continued providing great entertainment with some outstanding scores. This match could have gone to either side and a draw looked a possibility but chances and scores were coming fast and furious. Valleys created more scoring opportunities but luck including the opposition’s crossbar denied victory for Valleys. The game finished with 5-8 to 3-12. All 17 girls played very well and showed great attitude, competitiveness and good football skills in their first game back after the exam break in competition. Valley Rovers

County Division 2 League Final,

2010 Valley Rovers V Nemo Rangers

These two sides having topped the league met in the final in Ballincollig Tuesday June 28th. Having repulsed a few Valley Rovers attacks Nemo started the better with a goal by Helen Jones and a point by Niamh Dwyer. Gradually Valley Rovers worked their way into the game with a point by Tessa Crowley and a cracking goal by Maryanne Hawkes. The remainder of the half was a ding dong battle with Valley Rovers wasting chances by going for goals. The scoring was restricted to 2 points for each side Maria Gibbons and Geraldine Rea for Nemo, Anne O’Donovan and Sile Johnson for Valleys. Half time scores all level at 1-03 each. Nemo again started the second half the better. A fisted goal by Geraldine Rea was followed by a point and the pressure was back on Valley Rovers. They responded well with 3 points from Anne O’Donovan (2 from frees) and 1 from Sile Johnson to tie the game. Katie Richardson scored a wonderful point for Valley Rovers but Nemo responded with a point. Katie McCarthy chipped in with a point and Sile added another point. Kelly Sugrue had a great shot turned over the bar by Tessa Hawkes in the Valleys goal as the tension mounted. Anne and Sile added 2 points for Valleys and the game finished in a welter of excitement as Nemo threw everything into their efforts for a equalising goal and they could not have gone closer hitting the underside of the crossbar and the upright with two separate shots. The final whistle saw Valley Rovers celebrating but both sides benefiting from a very competitive game. Valley Rovers had a very solid defence in Julie O’Mahony, Vivien Melia, Ena Coughlan, Shauna McCarthy, Lucy Hawkes (Capt.) and Eimear O’Regan. The hard working Liz Bugler, Clodagh Deasy, Sarah O’Donovan and Orla Deasy. But this was a victory for the whole squad Emma O’Donovan, Fiona O’Sullivan, Marie Barrett, Jessie and Connie Hawkes, Elaine and Marie Forde, Niamh and Sinead O’Shea, Aisling Glavin and Audree Walsh.

County Division 2 League Semi-Final,

2010 Valley Rovers v Bride Rovers

Valley Rovers V Bride Rovers in the Division 2 League Semi-Final in Brinny Tuesday June 22nd. Bride Rovers started this game with an intensity and pace that appeared to unsettle our team. Goals from Grace Kearney from play and from a penalty were followed by 3 points. Valleys too had their chances but a combination of good defending and poor finishing left us with a half time score of just 4 points to their 2-03. The break gave us a chance to settle things down and we went out for the second half in determined mood. We were soon rewarded when goals from Anne O Donovan and Tessa Crowley settled us. We still found it hard to build on the good start but eventually the points started to flow Anne (1) Sarah (3) Sile Johnson (1) Katie Richardson (1) and a typical goal from Orla Deasy opened up the gap. We still had some tough defending to do but managed to restrict Bride Rovers to just 3 points in the second half. Final score Valleys 3-10 Bride 2-06. It may not have been our best team display but it was very satisfying to see how we responded to difficult circumstances, the defence was excellent with Tessa Hawkes, Julie O Mahony, Vivien Melia, Marie Barrett, Shauna McCarthy, Lucy Hawkes and Elmer O Regan all outstanding. This together with the hard work of Liz Bugler, Clodagh Deasy, Katie McCarthy, Connie Hawkes and those already mentioned made it a very satisfying evening’s work. We now meet Nemo Rangers in the Final Monday June 28th Ballincollig 7.45pm.

Fourth Game of County Division 2 League,

2010 Valley Rovers v St. Vals B

This was the final league game for both teams and with both in the semi finals only placings were at stake. St Vals arrived with only 12 players and we at a struggle had rounded up 15. (A number of girls are involved in Leaving Cert and a number are in Irish College). We naturally agreed to play 12-a-side. After a tentative opening we got into our stride and with great speed and movement the scores flowed. With 2 goals each from Sarah O’Donovan, Anne O’Donovan & Sile Johnson and points from Anne (4) Sile and Katie Richardson the half time score was Valley Rovers 6-06 St. Vals 0-03. The second half was a more even affair. With fine scores by Connie Hawkes (1-03), Clodagh Deasy (1-01) and fine running by Tessa Crowley (02). We also had great displays in defence by Vivien Melia, Ena Coughlan, Julie O’Mahony, Eimear O’Regan and Fiona O’Sullivan. Audree Walsh and Niamh O’Shea did very well and welcome back to Sinead O’Callaghan and Kiera Considine. On our day it will take a great team to beat us and we play Bride Rovers in the League semi next week.

U14 County Championship Semi-Final,

2010 Valley Rovers U14 v Boherbue

Carrigadrohid was the venue that hosted the semi-final of the county between Valley Rovers and Boherbue. Valley's got the first point on the scoreboard but unfortunately could only add another point to finish the first half well behind a very dominant Boherbue. Valley's had no answer to a very well organised first half display by Boherbue, who were able to take scores at will. Valley's stemmed the tide in the second half, and got a foothold in the game. They took some well worked scores from play, and also from set pieces. Despite Valley's best efforts Boherbue ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 4-15 to 2-4. Best wishes to Boherbue in the final. (Boherbue went on to defeat St. Vals in the final). Team: Ciara Richardson, Katie Lynch, Jennifer Murphy, Mary Ellen Sweetnam, Eleanor Murphy, Caroline Murphy, Leona Murphy, Megan O'Brien, Eimear Cummins, Aoibheann Harte, Michelle O'Regan, Emily Palmer, Lisa Lynch, Casey O'Sullivan, Jordan O'Connell, Jessica Woods, Joanne McCarthy, Roisin O'Regan, Cathy O'Donovan, Sophie Murphy.

U14 County Championship Quarter Final,

2010 Valley Rovers U14 v Midleton

Very poor weather conditions greeted Valley Rovers and Midleton U14 ladies football teams for their quarter final of the county championship. Midleton got off to a flying start, and scored 2 quick points. Valleys answered with a goal to lead by 1 point, which was short lived as Midleton dominated the next 20 minutes and scored goals and points at will. Valleys eventually woke up and scored a goal and 3 unanswered points to end the half just 1 point behind Midleton, and still very much in the game, which at one stage seemed to be slipping away, as Midleton lead by 7 points early on. It was a game of two halves and the second half belonged to Valleys, who found their rhythm, working the ball from the backs through midfield, and up into the forwards who finished off the moves with some brilliant scores. Valley Rovers superior skills and fitness levels saw them through to win by a score line of 4-09 to 4-03 and a place in the county semi finals.

Under 12B West Cork League Rounds 1 & 2, 2010

Valley Rovers Under 12B v Bandon

On Thursday May 20th, the Valley Rovers Ladies Under 12B team played their first match of 2010. The match was against Bandon and was played in Innishannon. The Under 12B team was made up mostly of girls born in 1999 i.e. Under 11 girls. Bandon do not have a team entered in the Under 12A league and therefore most of the Bandon team were at least a year older than their Valley Rover counterparts. Because of injuries, sickness and prior commitments only 15 girls were available for selection. We therefore had no substitutes. When Kate Bernard had to come off injured in the second half, Valleys had to finish the game with 14 players. Bandon won the game but each and every one of our 15 players battled heroically and at no stage during the match did they give up. Team: Sarah McCarthy, Niamh Whelan, Aileen Cremin, Lauren O’Brien, Eimear Kiely, Ellie Kiely, Darragh Kiely, Mary McSeoin, Emma O’Brien, Sinead Dart O’Flynn, Kate Bernard, Flo Dorrington, Celine Lordan, Ali Murphy, Aoibhinn O'Sullivan. Team Sponsor: O’Leary Auto Services Valley Rovers Under 12B v Gabriel Rangers On Thursday May 27th, the Valley Rovers Ladies Under 12B team played their second match of 2010. This was against Gabriel Rangers and was played in Ballydehob. Due to injuries and prior commitments, only 12 of the Under 12B panel were available for selection. 9 Under 10 players made themselves available for selection at short notice. The Valley Rover's full forward line in the second half was made up of girls aged 9 and 10. Even though the match was played in Ballydehob, Valley Rovers had most of the support. The match was exciting and all the girls played exceptionally well. Aoife O'Brien, Adi O'Sullivan, Roisin O'Donovan, Danielle Murphy, Grainne Dart O'Flynn & Emma Cuskelly deserve special mention as they were playing against girls 2 years older than them. Valley Rovers were beaten by 4 points in a game that we could have won. We would like to thank the parents who brought the players down to Ballydehob. Ran concurrently with the Under 12B game was a six-a-side game. This meant that all our players had a full match.

Second & Third Games of County Division 2 League, 2010

Valley Rovers v Bride Rovers

We travelled to Rathcormac with very tight numbers and were grateful to see Jessie Hawkes arrive to bring our numbers to 17. Bride Rovers started brightly and had 3 points scored before we got going. Gradually we settled and points by Anne O'Donovan and Orla Deasy were followed by a goal by Orla and we were on our way. Points by Anne, Orla (3), Sile and a goal by Katie McCarthy left us with a comfortable half time lead 2-07 to 4 points. Bride Rovers came out in determined fashion after half time and 2 points were followed by a goal by Grace Kearney. Valleys recovered their composure and points by Sile, Katie McCarthy, Lucy, Anne (2) and a goal by Katie McCarthy ensured that we ran out comfortable winners 3-12 to 1-09. This was a fine team performance from Tessa Hawkes, Julie O’Mahony Vivien Melia, Maria Barrett, Shauna McCarthy, Lucy Hawkes, Eimear O’Regan, Liz Bugler, Anne O’Donovan, Katie McCarthy, Maryanne Hawkes, Katie Richardson, Marie Forde, Sile Johnson, Orla Deasy, Clodagh Deasy and Jessie Hawkes. Valley Rovers V Nemo Rangers We travelled to Nemo Rangers, again somewhat depleted. We played against a strong wind in the first half and some great defending and poor finishing limited Nemo to a total of 3 points for the first half. In response from breakaway attacks we scored points from Sarah O’Donovan, Anne O’Donovan and a goal from Maryanne Hawkes. We lead at half time 1-02 to 0-03. The dour struggle continued in the second half with Nemo slowly closing the gap, but a goal from Orla Deasy keeping our noses in front. Finally Nemo drew level 0-08 to 2-02. A point from a free by Anne O’Donovan put us back in front but a harsh enough sin binning and a tight call allowing a Nemo goal put them ahead. We responded with a point from a free by Anne O’Donovan but despite our best efforts time ran out in our quest for an equalising score loosing out by 1 point 1-08 to our 2-04. Great credit is due to the girls who put in a huge effort in very difficult circumstances and conditions,

U14 West Cork League - Round 5, 2010

Valley Rovers U14 v Rosscarbery

On Thursday 13th May Valley Rovers welcomed Rosscarbery to Brinny for the final round of the West Cork League. After an earlier shower the skies cleared for the 7.15pm throw-in. A great start for Valley Rovers saw them score two goals in quick succession in the first few minutes. However Ross got into the game with an answering goal, but Valleys kept ahead on scoring and half time saw them in front by four points. An exciting and high scoring game with just a few minor injuries saw Valley Rovers finish ahead 8-6 to Rosscarbery 5-2. This was a wonderful team performance and sees Valley Rovers finishing top of the league.
